Difference Between Swiss And Cake Roll

Basically, a Swiss roll is a sponge cake rolled up with jam, whipped cream, ganache, etc. The origins of the term are unknown; contrary to its name, the cake would have originated somewhere in Central Europe, perhaps in Austria or Slovenia. As with Battenberg cake, doughnuts, and Victoria sponge, it seems to have been invented during the nineteenth century.

There is a subtle difference between a swiss roll and a cake roll. A swiss roll, on the other hand, is just a type of cake roll, and not all cake rolls are swiss rolls. Swiss rolls are always made from cake and filled with a filling, while cake rolls can often be made from other pastries or even be savory with meat filling.

Secret Tips For Making Vanilla Swiss Roll

  • Eggs at room temperature are preferred to ensure a large volume of whipped egg whites.
  • You may substitute any fruit jam of your choice (like raspberry, blueberry, etc.) for the strawberry jam.
  • Holding the cake together while rolling will allow the crack to seal together once it is wrapped in parchment paper. If it cracks during rolling, simply hold it together while rolling.
  • Since Swiss rolls require time to set, make sure to let them chill in the refrigerator for at least 3 hours before cutting and serving.

Pro Tip: You can try the eggless vanilla swiss roll recipe as well by adding 1/4 cup of plain yogurt instead of eggs.

The cake batter is very likely to have deflated while you folded the ingredients together. Make sure that you don’t deflate the batter when folding in the flour and butter.

How to make swiss roll and its cream?

    Well, here you go!

      For Vanilla Sponge:

      • Separate egg yolks from egg whites in separate bowls

Pro Tips: Use room temperature eggs.

      • In a bowl, combine egg yolks with 120g of granulated sugar.
      • Using a whisk, mix until the sugar is dissolved and a creamy texture is achieved.
      • Next, add vanilla essence, milk, and oil, the mix well. After that, add cake flour and salt. Combine well.
      • Put egg white in a bowl and beat with the help of a electric beater.
      • When bubbles begin to form, stir 40g of sugar into egg white in batches.
      • Continue beating with an electric beater until stiff peaks are formed. Slowly incorporate the meringue into the egg yolk mixture.

Pro Tips: Mix sugar gradually else the foamy texture will not come.

      • By using a spatula, fold and mix the mixture slowly.
      • Take a baking flat tray.
      • Place parchment paper on the tray and spray oil or grease with oil. Again spray oil and transfer the remaining batter to the tray.
      • Spread evenly with the help of a spatula and tap to remove the bubbles from the batter.
      • Get the oven ready by preheating it. Bake for 15 minutes at 180° celsius.
      • After baking, wait 10 minutes for it to cool.
      • Remove the cake from the tray.
      • Before filling the cake with cream, spray the corn starch on both sides.

Pro Tips: Corn starch prevents sticking the cake with the perchment paper or with the other side of the cake while folding it.

      • Now fold the cake when it is hot and very soft and wrap it with baking paper.Keep it aside.

NOTE: If you fold it when it is hot, it will not break, but if you fold itwhen it cools down, it will crack.

        For Swiss Roll Cream Filling:

        • Wash and chop the fresh fruits and keep them in a bowl.
        • In a bowl, take the whipping cream. Using the electric mixer, beat it until it's fluffy. Gradually add powdered sugar as the texture becomes creamy. Once more, beat it.
        • Add vanilla essence and 1 drop lemon yellow color and any chopped fruit as your choice. Here I add strawberry, raspberry, and blueberry slices with the whipped cream.
        • Folded gently with the help of a spatula.

        For Swiss Roll:

        • Now pour the whipped cream on the swiss roll and spread with the help of a palette knife evenly.
        • Roll the cake into the shape of a swiss roll.
        • Lastly, cover or wrap the entire cake in baking paper and keep it in the fridge for setting.

NOTE: If you don’t wrap it with paper the moisture of the cake will be soaked while you keep it in the fridge.

        • Remove it from the fridge after 30 minutes and slice it into slices like a Swiss roll.
